350+ hours of boring Math and Science topics were reimagined to make learning fun for students from Grades 4 to 12, in India as well as the USA.
Goal
The project demanded creation of high fidelity curricular content with exciting stories, animations, and interesting ways to teach drab concepts to middle and high school students. The content was made in collaboration with the world's top Math and Science experts like Professor Edward Burger, famous YouTubers like Derek Muller and Joe Hanson, and other popular educators like Aanand Srinivas and Byju Raveendran himself.
Process
The approach for each of the products varied widely. While the India product hinged more on the content, and required asset creation for animation, the International product was more about world building and storytelling. From organizing green screen shoots and experiments with renowned instructors to handling post-production with massive teams of various functions, the overall hustle was quite challenging but a lot of fun to say the least.
Based on the curriculum, the idea was to create a superset of content that could get mapped across grades and then start with recording. Additionally, at the scripting level itself, all the storyboarding and asset creation was handled, so that presenters could approach the recording of content with all the context they need. This also made post-production much easier.
With the Math and Science content for North America, the creation approach was very similar. But a lot more time went into researching the kind of content consumed by children in those markets, and accordingly the content was curated in 3D designed contextual environments along with extremely interactive experiments. In fact, we even innovated the production process to enable live keying and compositing of the presenter, remotely (we couldn't go to USA for over a year to do the shoots because of Covid restrictions.
Result
The content created for India ended up propelling our flagship product BYJU'S The Learning App to heights that defined the growth of EdTech globally. With games, tests, and a bunch of other features built into the app, the product garnered over 1.5M downloads and shaped the very success BYJU'S tasted in the years to come; in fact, the same model was taken forward to other markets like North America and Australia under the BYJU'S Future School initiative, giving the organization reach like never before.
